Programs and Services

Indigenous / Aboriginal education support (district program) School District 8 - Kootenay Lake offers Aboriginal Education supports designed to help First Nations (status and non-status), Métis, and Inuit students who self-identify, and students are encouraged and welcome to participate. Transportation (school bus service) SD8 provides student busing, including online student bus registration, route information, and bus pass resources. The district also outlines a bus student code of conduct focused on safety and respectful behaviour on regular routes and extra-curricular trips.

School Culture and Expectations

Erickson Elementary’s mission emphasizes helping students “dream,” “care,” and become confident, creative builders of their own future. The district bus code of conduct sets expectations for safe, respectful behaviour while travelling to and from school and at bus stops, including remaining seated while the bus is in motion, using appropriate language, and following the driver’s directions. The district also publicly acknowledges and honours the First Nations territories in which SD8 operates.

Transportation, Parking, and Getting Here

The school site links families to SD8 transportation resources, including bus registration. SD8’s bus code of conduct includes expectations such as arriving at the stop at least five minutes early, lining up and boarding in an orderly way, staying seated while the bus is moving, and crossing in front of the stopped bus only on the driver’s signal (never behind the bus). The district notes that students riding fewer than four days per week are not guaranteed a seat and that principals may discipline bus misconduct under the School Act.
