Student support / special education Nicholson Elementary offers Student Support Services for students experiencing learning difficulties in the regular classroom, with support provided during class time in the classroom and/or in small groups. The school also provides Speech-Language support through classroom, small-group, or individual sessions for students who are identified as needing this service. Counselling Counselling is available to Nicholson students and parents through teacher referral, parent referral, and/or student referral. Indigenous Education Students of Indigenous ancestry can receive additional academic and cultural support from the Indigenous Education Support Worker. Library Students have scheduled time during the school day to sign out books for use at home or during free reading time at school. Technology Nicholson Elementary has a “Computer Lab on Wheels (COW),” a class set of laptops on a cart for classroom use. Parents must sign a waiver before students can access the Internet. Cultural programs The school offers cultural activities presented by performing artists throughout the year, with performance information shared with teachers and parents. Buddy Activities Intermediate students may be partnered with primary students for buddy activities such as reading, writing, and art projects.
The school motto, “Learn, Love, Lead,” reflects a focus on learning together as a community, supporting one another, and leading by contributing positively to the classroom, school, and community. The principal describes a goal of creating an environment where every child feels safe, happy, and supported so learning can continue to grow. The school’s Code of Conduct outlines expectations for student behaviour at school, on the way to and from school, and during school-organized or sponsored activities; it also includes a disciplinary policy and dress code, and parents are consulted via the Parent Advisory Council when revisions are proposed.
