Student support / special education Sparwood Secondary offers STRIVE, an alternate program designed to meet individual student needs outside of the regular classroom. The school also provides Learning Assistance and full-time Youth Care services (in-house Youth Worker support) offering behavioral, emotional, and social support, including advocacy, peer groups, life-skills focus groups, and coordination with outside agencies. Indigenous student support (Aboriginal Education) Aboriginal Education Support is available to students who identify as being of Aboriginal ancestry, with support such as advocacy, communication between home/school/community, cultural presentations/field trips, peer groups and after-school homework support, and academic achievement/attendance monitoring. Food support The school hosts a free Breakfast Program that is open to all students. Athletics and extracurricular sports The school has historically supported participation in BC School Sports, including: Arts Drama aims to “establish a tradition of theatrical excellence at Sparwood Secondary,” with students working toward a theatrical production once a year. Health and wellness Kick the Nic is a youth-led nicotine/vaping harm-reduction initiative (SSS Nicotine Task Force), run in partnership with East Kootenay Addictions Services Society (EKASS), to help students make informed choices and access supports. Clubs and belonging PRISM (Pride, Race, Identity, Sexuality and Movement) is a student organization that creates a safe space for students to explore identities and connect with peers. Outdoor learning Outdoor Education provides opportunities to learn beyond the classroom through outdoor physical activities and skill-building (e.g., survival/outdoor skills, leadership and teamwork, and environmental stewardship).
Sparwood Secondary describes PRISM (Pride, Race, Identity, Sexuality and Movement) as a student organization that creates a safe space for students to explore their identities and connect with other students.
