Programs and Services

After-school programs (Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Culture) Suncrest offers many after-school programs delivered by Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Culture. Families are asked to ensure children know when they are registered, and most programs end after 4:00 pm; parents are responsible for transportation home. Safe arrival / attendance support Suncrest uses a “safe arrival program.” If a student is marked absent and the office has not received a parent note or call, the school will phone home to confirm the child is safe. Social-emotional learning (SEL) and behaviour support Students are taught social-emotional well-being and problem-solving language/strategies (e.g., calm down strategies, gratitude circles, and conflict-resolution approaches). When behaviour does not meet expectations, staff focus on discussion, mediation, restitution, and “fix-it” strategies, with additional steps (including contacting parents or outside agencies) for more serious incidents.

School Culture and Expectations

Suncrest teaches and reinforces its Code of Conduct in age-appropriate ways, emphasizing self-advocacy, problem-solving, and respectful communication. The school’s goals include improving writing and building empathy and respect to contribute to an inclusive environment, aligned with the First Peoples Principles of Learning. Expectations also include a dress code focused on maintaining a safe, caring, and respectful learning environment, and cell phone use is not permitted during instructional time unless directed for learning purposes.

Transportation, Parking, and Getting Here

After-school programs typically end after 4:00 pm and families are responsible for transportation home. For dismissal, families are asked to notify the school if they will be late or if someone else is picking up their child; if the school cannot reach a parent, staff will call emergency contacts. Students are not permitted to leave school grounds at lunch unless accompanied by an adult (with parent permission in special circumstances), and students must sign out/sign in at the office when leaving/returning.

Enrollment

If a family moves, they are asked to notify the office; the school will require two new pieces of proof of residence. The school notes that a student’s enrollment at Suncrest will not be affected if the family moves, even if the new address is out of catchment.
