Student support / special education Black Mountain Elementary offers Learning Assistance for students whose needs cannot be met through regular classroom instruction, with support that may include skill development, remediation, or compensation. The school also provides additional learning support for students with Ministry designations and individualized education plans (IEPs), supported by a School-Based Team that can include administrators, learning support teachers, a school counselor, and other specialists. Students may access services from district staff such as inclusion teachers, a speech and language therapist, an occupational therapist, and an Indigenous Student Advocate. English Language Learner (ELL) support Identified English Language Learners receive targeted support from an ELL Specialist teacher through direct instruction (1:1 or small group), in-class support, and collaboration with classroom teachers. Counselling Counselling services are available for students experiencing personal crisis, difficulty adapting to the learning environment, or emotional/social/behaviour concerns that interfere with functioning at school. Services may include short-term individual or group support, consultation with families and staff, referrals to community agencies, and individual plans for students designated as special needs under Ministry behaviour criteria. Athletics and extracurricular sports Physical activity opportunities The school promotes physical fitness through school-wide and classroom activities, including physical activity field trips (examples given: swimming, track and field, and hiking) and winter noon-hour gym games. School District 23 provides school bus transportation and requires families to submit an online transportation application; registered riders are issued a bus pass by the driver and must scan it when boarding or exiting. Students are expected to follow bus safety rules (for example: be at the stop 10 minutes early, remain seated, keep aisles clear, no guest riders, and no food or drinks other than a water bottle). The district advises families to plan safe walking routes to and from bus stops and highlights key loading/unloading safety (including crossing only in front of the bus when red alternating lights are flashing and the driver signals it is safe).
The school website includes a “Registration” link for families.
